Tips on Writing/Calling Your Representative
1. Be prepared. Establish and strengthen a relationship with your legislators. Be polite and as specific as possible -- never threaten.
2. Budget your time. Be concise on points you wish to make. Most meetings are quick, so budget time for good short discussion.
3. Be personal and specific. If possible, speak from personal experience when stating your position. Use the Quick Facts to the right.
4. During your visit... After your points are made, request specific action. Ask your legislator to adequately fund home and community services. Don't be afraid to ask your legislator's position. If they are undecided, ask them to inform you by mail or email when they make a decision, and to tell you why.
5. Stay in touch. Send a thank you note or email for their time and summarize the issues discussed. Follow through on any commitments you made, e.g., provide any additional information requested.
